We're comparing it to the iPhone 17 so you can decide whether you'd prefer to save some money or splurge on upgraded features. From construction to battery life to the camera and even colors, let's see how the newest budget iPhone stacks up.

The Basics: Comparing Storage & Price

Both of these phones are available in 256GB and 512GB options. The iPhone 17E, however, starts at $599, while the 17 starts at $799. Let's explore which features account for the $200 difference between the phones.

Design & Display Differences

Let's start with the core components of each phone. How is each iPhone designed? They're both durable, with an aluminum frame and Ceramic Shield 2 front for 3x better scratch resistance. Both iPhones are also water resistant up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, so they can survive a splash from the shower or pool. They're also both MagSafe compatible. That's largely where the similarities end. The iPhone 17 features Camera Control on the side of the phone, which lets you quickly open the camera and access common settings. The 17 gets further upgrades with the Always-On Display, Dynamic Island to control and monitor certain phone activities and ProMotion technology for refresh rates up to 120Hz for an ultra-responsive display.

Different iPhone Screen Sizes

As has previously been the case with Apple's previous lower-priced iPhones, the 17E is slightly smaller than the 17. The 17E has a 6.1" display, while the iPhone 17's display is 6.3". This really comes down to personal preference; there's not a huge difference in size, but some people might want a smaller phone because it's easier to hold in your hand or a purse, while others might prefer a larger screen for streaming shows.

What's Inside: Processing Power, Chips & More

While the iPhone 17 and the 17E are both powered by the A19 chip, there are some small differences. Both iPhones have a 6-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine for great processing power, but the iPhone 17 has a 5-core GPU compared to the 17E's 4-core GPU. Because the GPU helps power graphical elements, more cores means the iPhone 17 produces better graphics and has better response time for things like mobile gaming. The average user will be happy with the 17E's computing power, but users who are into mobile gaming or who are pursuing a career in content creation will appreciate the upgraded iPhone 17. Greater computing power also means the 17 has a better battery life: the 17 offers up to 30 hours of video playback versus the 17E's 26 hours.

Comparing Cameras

The camera is a place where you'll really notice the difference between these phones. While the iPhone 17E doesn't have a bad camera, the 17 is a serious upgrade. What do they have in common? They both feature the 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, with a 48MP main camera. They're both capable of taking super-high-resolution photos, and take great portraits with Focus and Depth Control. You'll also be able to record with Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60 fps. The iPhone 17, however, offers Macro photography for intensely detailed close-ups and the latest Photographic Styles, along with .5x optical zoom. The iPhone 17 also has an 18MP Center Stage front camera, with Center Stage for photos and video calls. The 17E doesn't feature Center Stage, but it does have a 12MP TrueDepth front camera. If you mainly use your phone for taking photos, it's worth investing in the iPhone 17. Of course, if you're upgrading from a much older iPhone, the 17E still offers great camera quality.

Different Color Options

Both models come in black and white, along with their own fun pastel hues. The iPhone 17 comes in black, white, sage, mist blue and lavender. The iPhone 17E comes in three colors: black, white, and, most excitingly, soft pink. Beyond the typical excitement that comes with any new iPhone release, the Internet was particularly buzzing about a pink iPhone. Again, while the color you choose doesn't impact performance, you should like the look of a device that you'll use every day.

iPhone 17 vs. 17E: Which New iPhone Should You Get?
