Jura C3 vs. C9: Comparing Jura's New Compact Coffee Machines
Shop the Jura C3 & C9
Which Features Do They Share?
There are certain features that are fundamental to any Jura machine. Both of these automatic machines feature their signature Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P®), which uses pulses of water at short intervals for maximum aroma extraction. They also feature the Professional Aroma Grinder, a surprisingly quiet conical burr grinder. Each has a 7 oz. hopper and 54 oz. reservoir. The C3 and C9 also share the same dimensions.
Design Similarities & Differences
Both of Jura's C-series machines are compact, and they're the first compact options from the brand to feature a full-size brew unit (the mechanism that brings water to the coffee puck). So if you're looking for a high-quality machine but are tight on space, the C3 or the C9 might be a great fit for your kitchen. These machines are basically the same size, so either will work in a small kitchen or crowded counter top. Their front panel is inspired by the larger Z10 model, with a concave-convex design. The C3 and C9 both come in black and white, but the C9 is also available in a stylish grey called Piano Inox. The only major difference is that the C9 features a full-color display, while the C3's screen is simpler. Each has a removable drip tray for easy cleaning. In terms of design, the C3 and C9 are pretty evenly matched.
Drink Options
The most important consideration when buying a new coffee or espresso machine is the kind of drinks it makes; at minimum, it needs to make your favorites. In terms of drink options, these machines are fundamentally different. The C3 makes four black coffee specialties: coffee, coffee doppio, espresso and espresso doppio. You can adjust the strength and temperature of each of those options, but the C3 is made to be simple for black coffee drinkers. The C9 has an integrated milk frother that allows for a wider variety of drinks, including lattes, flat whites and cortados. In this instance, neither machine is "better." They're made for different coffee drinkers, so choose the one that best fits your preferences.
Different Coffee Brewing Features
The Jura C9 offers a unique brewing feature that might help you choose between each machine. The C9 features Light Extraction Process (L.E.P.), which prepares a milder coffee drink at a lower temperature so you can drink it immediately. It's perfect if you don't love super-hot drinks, have sensitive teeth or just want to be able to drink your coffee right away on busy mornings. The brewing features these Jura machines share is that they can both make drinks from pre-ground coffee from a designated chute. They can also both brew two drinks at once, ideal if your spouse or roommate is also a black coffee drinker or if you're hosting.
Comparing Smart Coffee Features
Smart technology is another area where the C3 and C9 are largely the same. They're both compatible with Wi-Fi Connect, an optional device (sold separately) you can connect to your machine to enable control via Jura's J.O.E. app. The app lets you save profiles or customize your coffee with different strength and temperature options. So both machines can either be smart or not, whether you choose to add on Wi-Fi Connect or not.
