Happy Earth Day! Limit Your E-Waste at Abt

Happy Earth Day! Today is a great day to celebrate the beauty of nature and all it has to offer. It's also a good time to think about your daily impact on the planet, including your e-waste. E-waste, also known as electronic waste, is a term used to describe discarded devices at the end of their lifespan. Unfortunately, many of these items get sent to landfills instead of being recycled. Unsafe handling of old electronics can be harmful to both human health and the environment due to the risk of toxic materials and metals. These contaminants include lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. To help limit landfill e-waste for both Abt and our customers, Abt has created our Recycling Center. Over the past year, our center has processed about 4.6 million pounds of cardboard and paper, over 800,000 pounds of Styrofoam, over 24 million pounds of appliances and about 1.4 million pounds of electronics.

Discover Ways to Limit Your E-Waste

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

The most common way to limit your e-waste is to recycle it. As e-waste awareness has increased, more and more drop-off locations have opened—making recycling e-waste more convenient than ever. Abt is one of these sites, thanks to our Recycling Center. However, due to the nature of e-waste, some locations might not accept everything. For example, Abt's Recycling Center accepts a variety of appliances and electronics, including TVs, computers and AC units. However, our center does not take household batteries or light bulbs. To learn more about what you can bring to Abt's Recycling Center, check out our green initiatives page or give our team a call at 800-860-3577.

Repair Whenever Possible

While recycling is a great way to limit your e-waste, your older electronics or appliances might still have life left in them. That's why it's recommended to repair whenever possible. More often than not, only one or two parts will need to be replaced to get your appliance or electronic working again. Plus, repair services are often cheaper compared to buying new models. Here at Abt, we service everything we sell. Whether you've purchased a kitchen appliance or a gadget for your home office, our experts will do their best to fix it and get it working properly.

Try to Resell or Donate

While you might be ready for an upgrade, someone else might be looking for the model you currently have. Reselling or donating your older electronics is a great way to limit your e-waste. Thankfully, there are countless websites and in-person stores that accept used phones, computers and other electronics. Be sure to reach out to family and friends, too. You'll save them the hassle of looking while ensuring your used electronics don't end up in a landfill. Then, swing by Abt or visit our website to find your upgrade.

Sustainability at Abt

In addition to our Recycling Center, we've implemented even more ways to help support a healthy planet and reduce our carbon footprint. Our rooftop solar panels produce 2.6 megawatts of electricity, while our 10,000-gallon barrel collects rainwater to support our irrigation system. We also use LED bulbs to light up our store instead of traditional lightbulbs, which consume about 80% less energy and can last up to ten years. And we can't forget our rooftop bees. Our bees help pollinate our greenery and produce fresh honey, which is available for purchase right inside our store.
