Energy Star Center

What is the Energy Star Center?

The Energy Star Center is where Abt houses all of their most energy-efficient certified products for customers to explore. But what is Energy Star? Energy Star is a government-run program controlled by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Their goal is to promote energy efficiency by providing information to customers about the energy consumption of different devices and products. In fact, their certification label can be found on over 75 product categories, commercial buildings, homes and industrial plants. When appliances are Energy Star rated or certified, it typically means they're 10-20% more energy efficient than average models. This reduces energy consumption in the home, which ultimately saves users money and helps the environment. Since 1992, Energy Star has assisted businesses and families in America in achieving four billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions, saving five trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and avoiding over $500 billion in energy costs. What products can be rated or certified? Truly anything from appliances to electronics, no matter if it's heating/cooling systems or office equipment.

Exploring Energy-Efficient Options

Abt carries over 1,000 Energy Star appliances and products for you to add to your home collection. Hundreds of refrigerator/freezer models at Abt are rated about nine percent more energy efficient than their standard models. The ES program estimates that recycling your current refrigerator to replace it with a certified unit can save you over $260 over the unit's 12-year lifespan. There are plenty of high-performance features to credit for these savings. Defrosting mechanisms can keep the fridge running up to speed, high-efficiency compressors can create less heat and insulation can help your food stay cold, all of which results in less energy usage. While Abt offers a variety of dishwasher styles, a standard-sized model with an Energy Star certification costs about $35 a year to use and can end up saving you up to 3800 gallons of water. Best of all, they help to protect the streams, lakes and oceans. When purchasing one of these dishwashers, you can even consider innovative features like water filtration, soil sensors, improved dish rack designs and efficient jets to help with not only the washing performance but the energy use reduction as well.

While appliances may seem like the most common Energy Star-rated purchase for the home, you can even go a step further and invest in ceiling fan or light combination units that are just as energy efficient by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. While greenhouse gases help keep our planet warm enough to sustain life, too many emissions over time can contribute to negative climate change. Energy Star-rated ceiling fans feature cutting-edge designs with improved blades and motors and can perform 60% more efficiently than standard models.
