Consider Your Budget
How much do you want to spend on a new hair tool? Dyson's stylers are known for being high-quality, and the price reflects that no matter which styling tool you choose. However, there's a major price difference between the Airsmooth and the Airwrap Co-anda2x. The Airsmooth is a simpler tool, which is reflected in its $249 price (it's the cheapest hair tool Dyson offers). The Airwrap Co-anda2x, on the other hand, is described as the brand's "most powerful and intelligent Airwrap," and retails for $749. The Airwrap is a much bigger investment, but it also does more. Think of it this way: pay for what you'll use. If you're mostly interested in blowouts, it's not worth splurging on a tool that can straighten, curl or make waves. For those who do like to experiment with different styles, the Airwrap is an excellent tool.
Styling Options & Attachments
There's a big difference in the types of styles you can do with each tool. The Dyson Airsmooth will basically only give you a blowout, and it doesn't come with any attachments, just the bristle guard. That doesn't make it a bad tool; if that's all you plan to use your hair tool for, the Airsmooth is a great option.
The Airwrap Co-anda2x, on the other hand, comes with seven attachments. The Straight+Wavy model comes with the Air Straightener 2x, Conical Co-anda2x curling barrel, 1.6" Co-anda2x curling barrel, large round volumizing brush 2x, fast dryer 2x and anti-snag loop brush 2x attachments, while the Curly+Coily model comes with the Conical Co-anda2x curling barrel, large round volumizing brush 2x, fast dryer 2x, anti-snag loop brush 2x, Wave+Curl diffuser 2x and Wide-Tooth Tension comb 2x attachments. No matter what your hair type is, the Airwrap can do tons of different styles, from sleek and straight to beachy waves. If you like to switch up your look or want to learn how to do new hair styles, this is the better choice.
Which Tool is Best for Which Hair Types?
Your hair type plays a huge role in choosing the right styling tool. Dyson claims that the Airsmooth is engineered for all types, whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly or coily. The Airwrap Co-anda2x instead is available in two models: Straight+Wavy and Curly+Coily. There's a definite benefit to having a specialized tool designed specifically for your hair type, but this decision again depends on your hair routine. If you normally wear your hair natural but want to try a new look, for example, the Curly+Coily is specifically designed to style your hair texture in different ways. In short, both of these hair tools are evenly matched in terms of accommodating different hair types: one is made to be universal, while the other has multiple versions to suit different textures.
Design Differences
The Airsmooth is different from other dryer brushes in two important ways: its teardrop-shaped brush, which allows you to get closer to the roots, and flexible bristles that minimize snagging. There are actually two types of bristles on the brush: AntiSnag and PivotFlex. Currently, the Airsmooth only comes in the Ceramic Pink/Rose Gold colorway, so if you had a certain shade in mind or want to give it as a gift, it's something to consider. The Dyson Airwrap Cp-anda2x is a slightly larger tool, though it's not notably heavier than the Airsmooth. The Airwrap is also available in the Ceramic Pink/Rose Gold motif.
Controls
Each of these tools features two buttons that control 3 heat settings and 3 fan settings. The Airwrap Co-anda2x technically has 4 heat settings thanks to its Cold Shot Button, the thin blue button directly under the power button. Notably, the Co-anda2x features a redesigned button layout; if you've used an older Airwrap model in the past, there may be a learning curve there. All of the Airsmooth's controls are towards the top of the tool, near the styling brush, whereas on the Airwrap Co-anda2x the power and cold shot buttons are on the top, and the heat and fan controls are on the bottom.
Bluetooth Connectivity
One of the unique features on the Airwrap Co-anda2x is its Bluetooth connectivity, which enables the tool to personalize styling. You'll build your hair profile in the MyDyson app or even create multiple user profiles, which is great if you have a roommate or let your sister borrow your Dyson. It's not a must-have feature, but it's another way that the Airwrap Co-anda2x offers more customization of your hairstyle compared to the Airsmooth.
Portability & Travel-Friendliness
If you're investing in a hair tool to use every day, chances are you'll want to bring it with you on a trip. The Airsmooth is definitely smaller than the Airwrap Co-anda2x, though the Airwrap isn't so bulky that you can't bring it with you on a flight; the included case offers secure storage to protect your investment. However, one of the most exciting features on the Airsmooth is its universal voltage, a feature only found on this tool and the Supersonic Travel hair dryer. If international travel isn't in your future plans, though, this might not sway you. But even without that consideration, the Airsmooth's smaller size, no additional attachments and bristle cover make it incredibly travel-friendly.
