How to Troubleshoot Common iPhone Problems

Is your phone screen black? Won't charge? We've gathered tips from our experts to help you troubleshoot common problems and get your iPhone working again.

Your Phone's Battery Drains Quickly

If your iPhone battery is draining unusually fast, there are several ways to troubleshoot the issue.
  • Close unused applications. Certain applications use up more battery life, and apps running in the background will easily drain the battery. You can see which apps are using the most battery power by opening the Settings app, tapping "Battery" and scrolling until you see "battery usage by app."
  • Checking the Battery Health. Your battery's health refers to its capacity and peak performance; the lower the health, the sooner you'll need to charge your iPhone. To check your iPhone's battery health, open Settings, tap "Battery," then tap "Battery Health and Charging." If the Maximum Capacity is 80% or lower, your phone needs service.
  • Power cycle your phone. This is just another way of saying turn the device off, then turn it back on.
  • Enable Low Power Mode. iPhone's Low Power Mode will limit or turn off applications and features that drain the battery faster so you can go longer between charges. To turn on Low Power Mode, you'll once again go to Settings > Battery. Then, just toggle on Low Power Mode. You can also add this feature to the Control Center for easier access. To do so, you'll go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls and press the green plus sign next to Low Power Mode.

Phone Calls Are Dropping or Failing

Nothing is more annoying than a dropped call when you need to speak with someone. Try these to see if you can get your calls to stay connected.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on and off.
  • Check with your service provider. There may be a larger network outage that is affecting other people with the same provider. Unfortunately, if there's an outage, there isn't anything you can do to resolve the issue on your own.
  • Removing and reinserting the SIM card, if applicable.
  • Resetting your iPhone's network settings.

iPhone Display Not Working

Few things are as frustrating as trying to use your phone and simply seeing a black screen in return.
  • Put your device into DFU Mode.
  • Bring your phone to Abt for service. Our Connect Tech department is trained to troubleshoot these issues—we're even an Apple Authorized Service Provider, so you know you'll receive the best customer service.

Your Apps Keep Crashing

Whether a show or game is interrupted or you lose an important work email mid-draft, apps crashing can become a major inconvenience.
  • Turn your phone off and on.
  • Check for an iOS update. If the software on your phone is extremely dated, eventually it will be difficult to support up-to-date apps.
  • Check for an app update. There may be a bug that has been addressed in the latest version of the app.
  • Delete and reinstall the app. This is almost like "resetting" the application.
  • Close out of any unused apps. You may be asking your phone to work too hard if you have tons of apps open.

FaceID Isn't Working

FaceID is an important security feature on iPhone, so it's imperative that it works. There are a couple ways to troubleshoot this problem:
  • Power cycle your phone.
  • Go to Settings and reset FaceID.
