Abt Electronics Completes 430,000-Square-Foot Warehouse Expansion, launching ‘a new era’ for the innovative retailer

Addition enables Abt to take its growth, customer service and green initiatives to new heights

GLENVIEW, Ill. – Abt Electronics, the country’s largest independently-owned, single-location retailer of electronics, appliances and home goods, has completed a massive expansion of its warehouse, launching a renewed commitment to company growth, customer service and environmental action.

The nearly 430,000-square-foot addition more than doubles inventory space in the warehouse, enabling the Glenview, Ill.-based retailer to better serve customers with expanded product lines and focus on growth across its categories. The warehouse addition also enhances efficiency and eco-friendly practices, a priority for the retailer that has long been known for its innovative green initiatives. In addition, the project includes two three-story additions that house Abt’s trucking and security offices and a break room, plus open office space to accommodate future expansions. The warehouse expansion is 407,294 square feet, and the new office space is 22,230 square feet.

As with past expansions of Abt facilities, the local community benefited from the extensive project. The retailer partnered with the Glenview Park District to make improvements to Community Park West, which is located next to Abt. The improvements, which were funded by Abt and cost $1.6 million, included additional parking for park visitors and an extension of the park’s main road so it no longer dead-ends but now circles through the property. In addition, Abt constructed an access road in the park to accommodate its increased truck deliveries and traffic resulting from the expansion.

Abt Electronics was founded in 1936 when Jewel Abt loaned her husband Dave $800 to open a small electronics store in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Abt has grown to become the largest independent, single-store retailer of electronics, appliances and home goods in the country.
