Designed for Audiophiles
Experience stunning channel separation and extended frequency response thanks to Audio-Technica’s precise dual-magnet design, which closely mimics the cutter head used during master record production. The die-cast aluminum housing effectively dampens unwanted vibrations and resonance, while paratoroidal coils and PCUHD (Pure Copper Ultra High Drawability) wiring contribute to improved generating efficiency, clear channel balance, and vivid transient response. Enjoy three-dimensional sound and reduced crosstalk while you immerse yourself in your favorite albums.
Effortless Installation and Compatibility
Installation is a breeze with threaded inserts that simplify mounting on any headshell accepting 1/2" cartridges—no nuts required. The V-cut stylus protector takes the guesswork out of lowering the stylus onto a record, offering both safety and convenience. Compatible with most AT-VMx replacement styli*, this versatile cartridge gives you a range of upgrade paths for different listening needs. Bring out the best in your records with technology crafted for today’s discerning vinyl enthusiasts.
Key Features
- AT-VMx dual moving magnet cartridge with microlinear stylus
- Microlinear stylus tracks the record groove with incredible accuracy, providing more nuanced sound reproduction than elliptical and conical styli
- Significantly lighter stylus tip (compared to previous model) allows for more precise tracing of the record groove
- Solid boron cantilever quickly transmits vibrations from the record groove, ensuring accurate reproduction of dynamic musical passages
- Die-cast aluminum housing reduces vibrations and resonance
- Paratoroidal coils improve generating efficiency for enhanced channel separation, channel balance, and transient response
- PCUHD (Pure Copper Ultra High Drawability) coils – and fewer coil turns – deliver highly responsive, three-dimensional sound reproduction with excellent transient response
- Center shield plate between the left and right channels reduces crosstalk for clear stereo sound
- Threaded inserts make cartridge easier to mount, especially to integrated tonearms
- V-cut in the flip-up stylus protector shows stylus position, serving as a guide for lowering the stylus onto a record
- Compatible with any turntable headshell that accepts 1/2" cartridges
- Compatible with most AT-VMx series replacement styli,* offering a wide choice of options for every budget and application
- *Excludes mono models
Features
- Easy to Install & Use
Each AT-VMx cartridge body has threaded inserts, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell with just two screws – no nuts required. And the redesigned stylus protector now includes a V-cut for easy reference of the stylus’s position when lowering it onto a record. - Highly Efficient Generator
The paratoroidal coil construction of the cartridge's generator - two PCUHD coils per channel, one stacked behind the other - greatly improves electromagnetic performance, while a slight reduction in coil turns* enhances transient response for clean, lifelike sound.- *Compared to VM series cartridges.
- Solid Boron Cantilever and Metal Body
The three premium VMx models (AT-VM760x, AT-VM750x, AT- VM745x) feature a solid boron cantilever. Naturally lightweight and rigid, boron transmits signals from the record groove faster than an aluminum cantilever. The result is more accurate sound reproduction that's particularly noticeable on dynamic musical passages. The die cast aluminum body reduces vibrations and resonance. - Interchangeable Styli
Since all AT-VMx and VM Series cartridges share the same body design and have a removable stylus, you can use almost any AT- VMNx or VMN replacement stylus* with any VMx or VM cartridge for easy experimentation with sound characteristics.- AT-VMN10xCB (conical/bonded/aluminum cantilever)
- AT-VMN20xEB (elliptical/bonded/aluminum cantilever)
- AT-VMN30xEN (elliptical/nude/aluminum cantilever)
- AT-VMN40xML (microlinear/nude/aluminum cantilever)
- AT-VMN45xML (microlinear/nude/boron cantilever)
- AT-VMN50xSH (Shibata/nude/boron cantilever)
- AT-VMN60xSL (special line contact/nude/boron cantilever)
- * Excludes mono models
- All in the Design
The Vertical Dual Magnet (VM) design closely mirrors the cutter head used to make the vinyl master.
The standard cutter head (used to record the vinyl master) uses two transducer coils, mounted perpendicular to each other at 45° from horizontal, to cut the channel: one in each wall of the 90° record groove.
The AT-VMx cartridges use the same 90° V-Shape configuration as the cutter head. This way, the cartridge achieves accurate tracking, excellent channel separation, high definition of the stereo image and extreme clarity over the entire audio spectrum. - Round or Square Shank?
The stylus shank is the piece that connects the tip to the cantilever. A round shank can be more difficult to align when it is affixed to the cantilever. Proper alignment is needed in order to position the stylus tip precisely in the record groove. Square shank styli cost more to make than round shank styli, but mounting them in laser-cut square holes in the cantilever locks them in precise alignment with the record groove. - Bonded or Nude?
In a bonded (or jointed) stylus, a diamond tip is glued on a metal shank that is itself glued into the hole of the cantilever. While less expensive to manufacture, this construction may increase the mass of the overall tip and affect transient response compared with a nude stylus where the tip and shank are constructed from a single piece of diamond.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Installation is straightforward with threaded inserts that allow mounting on any headshell accepting 1/2" cartridges using just two screws—no nuts required. The V-cut stylus protector assists in correctly lowering the stylus onto the record, ensuring a safe and convenient setup.
-
This cartridge features a dual moving magnet design that closely mimics the master record cutter head, providing excellent channel separation and a broad frequency response from 20 to 27,000 Hz. The solid boron cantilever transmits vibrations quickly for detailed, dynamic sound while the die-cast aluminum housing reduces unwanted vibrations and resonance, resulting in a clear, expansive soundstage.
-
Yes, the cartridge body is compatible with most AT-VMx and VM Series replacement styli, allowing users to experiment with various stylus types such as conical, elliptical, microlinear, and more. This flexibility provides options for tailoring sound characteristics and upgrading performance over time.
-
The recommended tracking force ranges from 1.8 to 2.2 grams with a standard setting at 2.0 grams. Proper tracking force ensures accurate groove tracing and helps minimize record wear while optimizing sound quality.
-
The cartridge has an impedance of 3.2 k ohms at 1 kHz, and the recommended load is 47 kilo-ohms. Matching the load impedance properly maximizes frequency response and channel balance, leading to an improved listening experience.
