Sony SEL400F45GM FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS Super Telephoto Prime Lens
The Sony SEL400F45GM FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS opens a new world of super-telephoto freedom for photographers who want professional reach without the traditional bulk and fatigue. G Master image quality and advanced autofocus come together in the world's lightest 400mm F4.5 full-frame super-telephoto prime,1 making handheld wildlife, bird, sports, trainspotting and action photography more mobile. A center of gravity positioned closer to the camera body and tripod mount supports smooth framing, tracking and panning, while internal focusing keeps the lens length constant as focus shifts. The result is a balanced E-mount system designed for extended sessions and locations where a tripod or monopod is hard to use.
Image quality starts with an advanced optical design using three Super ED elements to control aberration and preserve crisp detail from the center of the frame to the edges. Sony's Nano AR Coating II limits flare and ghosting so backlit scenes retain strong clarity and contrast. Beyond sharpness, an 11-blade circular aperture and carefully optimized spherical aberration shape defocused areas into smooth, creamy G Master bokeh. From fine feather detail to athletes isolated against busy backgrounds, the lens balances high resolution with expressive rendering.
Two XD Linear Motors, one assigned to each focus group, deliver the speed, precision and quiet response needed to stay with moving subjects. With the Alpha 9 III, the lens supports continuous shooting at up to 120 fps with AF/AE tracking,2 while built-in Optical SteadyShot helps counter camera shake at the 400mm focal length. Compatible camera bodies add Active Mode and coordinated stabilization for handheld stills and movies, plus breathing compensation that corrects angle-of-view changes during focus transitions.3 Extensive barrel controls put important settings within easy reach, and optional teleconverter support gives photographers room to adapt when distant subjects demand more reach. Outdoor-oriented construction and a contaminant-resistant front element help make this mobile G Master prime ready for demanding fieldwork.
Key Features
Balanced for Handheld Freedom
The latest mechanical design places the lens' center of gravity near the camera and tripod mount, reducing leverage in the hands. That balance makes it easier to search for wildlife, hold a composition, follow erratic motion and maintain a fluid pan during long sessions.
G Master Detail and Bokeh
Three Super ED elements restrain chromatic aberration so demanding subjects remain finely resolved across the image. In difficult light, Nano AR Coating II manages reflections, while the rounded 11-blade aperture gives foreground and background blur a polished, natural look.
Fast, Precise and Quiet Focus
A separate XD Linear Motor drives each focus group through a lens-specific control algorithm. The system responds quickly without adding disruptive focus noise, helping maintain confidence when photographing unpredictable birds, wildlife and competitive action.
Stabilization for Handheld Creation
Optical SteadyShot works inside the lens to reduce blur from camera movement. With a compatible Alpha body, Active Mode and coordinated stabilization control broaden support for handheld stills and movie capture, while breathing compensation can smooth framing changes during focus pulls.
Intuitive Super-Telephoto Operation
Four customizable focus-hold buttons surround the barrel for access in different orientations. The function ring adds camera-dependent assignment options,4 while the focus-range limiter, Full-time DMF, focus-mode and stabilization-mode switches enable quick adjustments from the shooting position.
Teleconverter Expandability
Pairing the lens with the optional SEL14TC changes the combination to 560mm F6.3, while the SEL20TC reaches 800mm F9.5 This added flexibility lets photographers extend framing options for small or exceptionally distant subjects.

Footnotes:
1 As of the September 2026 product announcement, based on a Sony survey of full-frame super-telephoto lenses with a maximum aperture of F4.5 or faster that include a 400mm focal length.
2 Based on Sony tests. Maximum continuous shooting speed may be lower in some conditions.
3 Active Mode, coordinated stabilization and breathing compensation require compatible camera bodies. Breathing compensation can slightly change angle of view and image quality and may not be fully effective with every compatible combination.
4 Function-ring assignments depend on the camera body. Some functions may not be available with some cameras; in those cases, Power Focus is assigned by default.
5 SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverters are supported.
6 The lens is not guaranteed to be completely sealed against dust or water droplets.
