A center of gravity positioned closer to the camera body and tripod mount supports smooth framing, tracking and panning, while internal focusing keeps the lens length constant as focus shifts. The result is a balanced E-mount system designed for extended sessions and locations where a tripod or monopod is hard to use.

Image quality starts with an advanced optical design using three Super ED elements to control aberration and preserve crisp detail from the center of the frame to the edges. Sony's Nano AR Coating II limits flare and ghosting so backlit scenes retain strong clarity and contrast. Beyond sharpness, an 11-blade circular aperture and carefully optimized spherical aberration shape defocused areas into smooth, creamy G Master bokeh. From fine feather detail to athletes isolated against busy backgrounds, the lens balances high resolution with expressive rendering.

Two XD Linear Motors, one assigned to each focus group, deliver the speed, precision and quiet response needed to stay with moving subjects. With the Alpha 9 III, the lens supports continuous shooting at up to 120 fps with AF/AE tracking,² while built-in Optical SteadyShot helps counter camera shake at the 400mm focal length.
