- The Scenario: It’s a warm summer evening. You’ve recently installed and activated two sensors, one for the living room and one for the bedroom.
You and the kids are spending most of the night in the living room watching a movie. In the middle of the movie, you run to the bedroom to get your phone, triggering the bedroom sensor. - Question: With two room sensors reporting occupancy simultaneously, how does my ecobee smart thermostat decide which one’s readings to prioritize?
- Answer: Up until now, you and the kids have spent most of your evening together in the living room. So your ecobee thermostat will continue to prioritize the living room sensor’s occupancy readings and won’t “overreact” to one or two readings from the bedroom sensor.
If you decide to skip the rest of the movie and read a book in bed, your smart thermostat will gradually rebalance the household temperature for comfort in both rooms.
As soon as everyone’s left the living room, the importance of its sensor’s readings will shrink down to zero over the next half hour.

- Smart Recovery
With the Smart Recovery feature enabled, your ecobee uses local weather information, your occupancy habits, and an ongoing analysis of your HVAC system’s heating and cooling patterns so that it’s always the right temperature at the right time.
For example, if you routinely wake up at 6 a.m., Smart Recovery will start your HVAC equipment in advance to ensure your home is at your desired temperature by the time you’re up.- How it works
As your ecobee thermostat gets to know your schedule and your home’s heating and cooling patterns, it learns how long it takes your home to get to your desired temperature. The longer you’ve had your thermostat, the more data it has, and the better it gets at bringing your home to the desired temperature by a specific time.

- Thermal Protect
Keep your home comfortable and prevent your HVAC system from excessive runtime with Thermal Protect. With it enabled, your ecobee thermostat will ignore a sensor when its readings diverge from those of your other sensors beyond a certain customizable limit. (This can sometimes happen when a sensor is placed in a room that tends to get hotter (e.g. attic) or cooler (e.g. the basement) than the rest of the home.)

- Setup & Placement: Installing SmartSensor
- Activate Add SmartSensor with the + button in the ecobee app. Scan the QR code then pull the tab. Follow in-app set up steps.
- (A.)Place on surface Using the stand, set your sensor on a surface around 4 feet off the ground and away from exterior walls and windows.
(B.) Place on wall Got curious children or pets? Simply attach your sensor to an out-of-reach spot on an interior wall. (No tools necessary!)
