Garmin lists smartwatch satellite coverage in the continental U.S., parts of Canada and most of Europe, rather than global coverage. Trees, terrain and buildings can block the signal, and satellites appear lower on the horizon farther north. Review Garmin's coverage information before traveling. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit satellite communication devices.

Stop moving and follow the watch's on-screen positioning instructions. A clear view toward the satellite is needed; if trees, terrain or buildings block the signal, you may need to move. Even with correct positioning, establishing a connection can take 30 seconds or more of good signal strength. A phone connection is not required for satellite messaging, but an active inReach plan is required.
