Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. An active inReach plan is required for LTE and satellite communication features. LTE coverage is not available in all regions, and satellite connectivity and SOS have important limitations. Check Garmin's feature requirements and coverage information for the areas where you plan to use these services.
-
Yes. After setting up Garmin Messenger on a compatible smartphone, you can leave your phone behind and use supported communication features with an active inReach plan. Voice calls require LTE and the Messenger Calls app, and can reach other inReach-capable devices or people who have set up Garmin Messenger on a compatible smartphone. Two-way messaging is available over LTE or an established satellite link. LTE-M does not provide a phone number, traditional voice calls or SMS messaging.
-
Satellite coverage is available in the continental U.S., parts of Canada and most of Europe. A clear view toward the satellite is required, and trees, terrain or buildings can block the signal. Coverage becomes more challenging farther north as satellites appear lower on the horizon. Check Garmin's coverage information before traveling. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit satellite communication devices.
-
Stop moving and follow the on-screen positioning instructions. If trees, terrain or buildings block the satellite, move to a location with a clear view. Once correctly positioned, connecting can take 30 seconds or more of good signal strength. After connection, messages generally send in less than 10 seconds. Continue following the positioning guidance while the message sends.
-
No. LiveTrack location sharing uses LTE when available and is not supported over satellite. You can designate friends and family to receive a notification when you start a LiveTrack session so they can follow your activity. An active inReach plan and LTE coverage are required for phone-free LiveTrack connectivity.
