How to Mount a TV on a Wall: The Ultimate Guide

Want to hide your TV cords and create an entertainment center that's free of clutter? Learn how to properly mount your TV on a wall with this helpful guide.

Getting Started

Creating a sleek, seamless entertainment hub is a breeze with the right TV wall mount. These flexible, space-saving components take your TV off the furniture and onto the wall, leaving an attractive display that's more like a work of art than a piece of technology. If you're ready to take advantage of this option, we're here to walk you through the process.
Man Installing TV Mount on Wall
Luckily, mounting a TV is a relatively simple and straightforward process that doesn't require the help of a professional. Most TV wall mounts use a mounting pattern standardized by the international nonprofit VESA, so you don't have to worry about finding a compatible model (just make sure the mount you choose can handle the weight of your TV). This design features a plate that hangs on the wall and arms that attach to the TV, simplifying the installation process for you.
With that being said, not all mounts are created equal. Mounts come in full-motion, tilting and fixed-position options, which can help you achieve different entertainment goals, including reducing glare and making cables easy to access. If you need help determining which TV mount to buy, reference the Abt Mount Finder Guide as well as our TV Mount Buying Guide. These resources will most likely answer any question you have about finding the best choice for your TV.

Steps To Mount A TV

What You'll Need

Before you begin, you'll want to gather your supplies. Reference the list below and bring everything into the area where you'll be mounting the TV. We also recommend enlisting the help of a friend or family member, especially if you're working with an especially heavy or large TV that may be difficult to lift or balance.
  • Level
  • Stud finder
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Fasteners
  • Drill
  • Screwdrivers
  • TV wall mount

Follow These Steps

  1. Step 1: Install the Arms onto the TV—Before you begin, determine exactly where you want to hang the TV, making sure to install it near an electrical outlet. The first step of mounting is to screw the arms onto the back of the TV using a screwdriver. We don't recommend using a powered drill for this step because it could damage the back of the TV.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Wall—The next step is to hang the mounting plate onto the wall. Using your tape measure, determine where you want the bottom of the bracket to hang on the wall. Mark it with a pencil. Use your stud finder to find the studs within the wall and mark them in pencil. Using your level, position the plate where you want it to be and drill the holes according to the size of your fasteners.
  3. Step 3: Mount the Backing Plate—To begin, hold the mounting plate as you hand-screw in the fasteners into the pre-drilled holes. Depending on how heavy or large the backing plate is, you may want to have a second set of hands to help you hold it in place while you secure it to the wall. Using your drill or an impact driver, drill the screws into the wall, securing the plate. Make sure the mount is level.
  4. Step 4: Hang Your TV—To hang your TV, you'll need to connect the arms on the back of the TV with the slots on the backing plate. We highly recommend having someone help you with this part, especially if your TV is large or heavy. Connect the arms to the plate and voila! Your TV is mounted.

Reference the Manufacturer's Instructions

Remember that not all TVs, mounts and walls are the same, so you'll want to make adjustments as needed. Reference the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer of the TV mount as well as any instructions provided by the manufacturer of the TV itself. Make sure to consider your home's wall type and other factors before drilling any holes.
